Kiwis used to be known as the most positive people on the planet, with a "she'll be right" attitude and a ready smile. Yet, daily, we're bombarded with bad news. This is a change from that, focusing less on the bad and more on the good guys and acknowledging Kiwis who have added to our way of life. Click any of the images for the details - you should recognise some of the people as we build the database, but we do want to acknowledge the lesser-known along with the already-famous.

Let's give the kudos where it's due and consign the dickheads of life to the back pages*.

Salute those who not only give their time, energy and effort, but who also inspire others by their example.

Even the New Zealand Herald has jumped on the bandwagon, so good on them for putting up a serious reward for someone - just a pity that they can only do it once. Maybe the money could have been better spent holding one civic reception in the Town Hall for a couple of hundred? Probably wouldn't have cost any more, either.

Because this is a tribute to altruism, we have left out some people who are considered heroes by many New Zealanders. Obviously, many omissions on our list are due to oversight and will be corrected in time, but a list is included here of some who missed out for other reasons. Kiwis not born here aren't being considered at this stage.

One item we can't let go to the back page is rip-offs masquerading as fuel savers. Given the immense rise in the price of petrol, many people are wondering whether these device might save them money. We have investigated Fuelstar, GasWiz and Ecotube on behalf of people who want to cut their fuel bills.

This is Fuelstar's claim. It sounds too good to be true.

It is.

It doesn't work, and never will.

Ridiculous fuel-savers.
